Standing The Test of Time
Time is the one element of a forklift deal that's hard to prepare
for.
Despite all the best planning, your requirements can change dramatically
within the five year term of a typical contract, and you don't want
to be left high and dry.
What you can do is look at a forklift company's track record,
although if you're the first national fleet customer - as DSL were
for Doosan Daewoo in 2004 - you're going to have to take some things
on trust.
"We worked very hard to prove to DSL that we were right for
them," says UK business manager, Darren White. "Two years
on, and we're delighted to say things have run very smoothly."
Since those early days, some big names have put their faith in
Doosan, Eddie Stobart, Allied Bakeries and Christian Salvesen amongst
them.
But that wasn't going to influence DSL. "Our business revolves
around materials handling and transportation," says transport
Kevin Firth. "It's very important that we not only have a cost-effective
set up, but that we have the flexibility react to the changes in
of our workflow."
Deborah Service Limited is a UK-wide supplier of scaffolding services,
multi-discipline contracting, the hire & sale of access equipment
plus specialist skills, such as asbestos removal.
Having over 50 sites nationwide with differing layouts, ground
conditions and demands makes them a true test for a forklift supplier.
"We're had excellent service, which I'm sure makes a big difference
to the total cost of ownership, and the trucks have been as tough
and rugged as we expected them to be," says Kevin.

Small Is Best
It's official: Employees of small businesses have more fun than
those in large firms. The Government's latest survey of workplace
employment relations confirms that you get more belly laughs in
a firm that employs fewer than 10 people. Typical, we're up to
12!
Flattery Will Get You Somewhere
The Concrete Society set up a special working group in 2001 to
consider the issue of floor flatness in defined movement areas
such as warehouse aisles. Many very narrow aisle (VNA) trucks
now incorporate sophisticated computer systems, even being guided
down the aisle by low frequency cables in the floor. Standards
of floor flatness have therefore become increasingly important.
New standards, which include for the first time measurement of
the positions of all wheels and a long wave-length control, came
out in March and, although they cannot be enforced, they are accepted
in general by all the industries concerned.
